Biochemical Characteristics of Staphylococci Isolated from the Air in the Hospital and Theaters

Abstract
We studied to investigate the degree of contamination of the air in the theaters. and hospitals, staphylococci were isolated from the air in both of the places by means of fall out method (1 hour exposure) during the periods from January to February of 1972(A) and from May to August of 1974(B) in Daejeon city.
The isolation rate, biological characteristics and antibiotic resistance of the isolated staphylococci were studied.
The results were summarized as follows;
1. All types of staphylococci were isolated from both of theaters and hospitals. and average percentage of isolation rates were 24.9% in the theaters, 41.3% in the: A hospital, and 35.6% in the B hospital.
2. Coagulase activity of the isolated staphylococci were positive in 243 strains out. of 729 strains isolated from theaters (33.4%), in 69 strains out of 144 strains isolated from A hospital (46. 5%), and in 89 strains out of 215 strains isolated from B hospital (41.3%), respectively.
3. Activity of mannitol fermentation in the coagualse positive staphylococci isolated from theaters, A hospital and B hospital were observed in 202 strains (83.2%), 63, strains (94.1 %) and 84 strains (94.4%), respectively. On the ; other hand, cogulase negative staphylococci isolated from theaters, A hospital and B hospital were fermented the mannitol in 107 strains(22.1%), 22 strains (28. 6%) and 31 strains (24.6%)
4. Antibiotic resistance in the isolated staphylococci from the theaters were obtained.
eyed 75.5% in Terramycin, 68.8% in Streptomycin, 49.3% in Chloramphenical, 48.7% in Penicillin, 47.2¡Æ/0 in Aureo.nycin,43.0% in Erythromycin, 16.0% in Leuco-mycin and 15.2% in Kanamycin, from the A hospital were observed 85.4% in Strep-tomycin, 82.0% in Terramycin, 67.3% in Erythromycin, 61.8% in Aureomycin,
56.9% in Chloramphenicol, 50.0% in penicillin, 28.5% in Leucomycin and 20.8% in Kanamycin and from the B hospital were observed 96.2% in Terramycin, 89.7% in Streptomycin, 86.5% in Erythromycin, 73.0% in Aureomycin, 66.5% in Chloramph-
enicol, 60.0% in Penicillin, 40.0% in Kanamycin and 34.4% in Leucomycin, respe-ctively.
According to above results, bichemical characteristic of staphylococci were not observed any differences among isolated from the theater, A hospital and B hospital. However, isolation rate of staphylococci from the air in the A and B hospital were higher than that of the theaters.
